20 Original Counties

Today there are 67 counties in Florida. There were 20 counties established when Florida became a state on March 3, 1845.
They are listed below with the year they were established:
1. Alachua 1824
2. Brevard 1844
3. Columbia 1832
4. Dade 1836
5. Duval 1822
6. Escambia 1821
7. Franklin 1832
8. Gadsden 1823
9. Hamilton 1827
10. Hernando 1843 (became Benton county, then reverted to Hernando)
11. Jefferson 1827
12. Madison 1827
13. Marion 1844
14. Orange 1845 (Jan 30, about 1 month before Florida admitted to union)
15. St. Johns 1821
16. St. Lucie 1844
17. Santa Rosa 1842
18. Volusia 1834
19. Wakulla 1843
20. Walton 1824
